Changing role of today’s pharmacists
Jenny Gau, PharmD
“The pharmacist’s role has changed greatly in the past five years,” says Jenny Gau, PharmD, a manager with Pharmacy @ Park Nicollet. “Although we still dispense medications, we also have many roles the general public doesn’t see. We are researchers in pharmaceutical companies, advisors with insurance companies and integral members of patient care teams. In all these positions, our primary goal is to ensure people receive the best possible care when it comes to medication safety and effectiveness.”
The importance of one pharmacy
People still are most familiar with pharmacists in retail settings. Gau recommends working with only one pharmacy that’s convenient for you — whether it’s near your home, workplace, doctor’s office or clinic. “Using one pharmacy for all your medications is especially important when people receive prescriptions from more than one doctor, because it helps prevent dangerous interactions. We also ask patients about any over-the-counter medications and herbal supplements they may be taking, because these, too, may cause interactions.”
Part of your care team
Today’s pharmacists work more closely with doctors and patients than ever before. Some seek additional training with a residency or fellowship program. In hospital settings, they tend to be part of the care team, reviewing medications, making recommendations and going on doctor rounds.
Consulting with patients remains a top priority with retail pharmacists. “When filling prescriptions, one of our main roles is to provide information,” Gau explains. “With every prescription, especially new ones, we make sure patients understand the doctor’s instructions and understand why they are taking it, because that leads to greater compliance. We also encourage patients to ask questions — whether on the phone or in person. No appointment necessary.”
