Jeff, bariatric surgery patient
Throughout high school, Jeff, 37, weighed 250 pounds, a healthy weight for his 6-foot 3-inch frame. He kept in shape by playing on the football and basketball teams.
But after graduation, Jeff continued to eat as if he were still on the teams. Within a year, his weight shot up to 300 pounds, which he was able to maintain for about 15 years. “Then about four years ago, I lost track of it and it skyrocketed. Next thing I knew, I weighed 380 pounds,” he says.
Weight wasn’t his only problem. Jeff developed arthritis in both knees and elevated blood pressure. Perhaps most devastating, his conditions started to interfere with his work. “I was a police officer on the SWAT team, and they put me on the inactive list. I was crushed. But I could understand where they were coming from; I simply wasn’t up to the physical demands of the job.”
Time to seek help
His doctor recommended Jeff check out Park Nicollet Bariatric Surgery Center. He attended an informational meeting, where he learned about the different procedures available. He opted for adjustable band surgery, which he had in August 2007.
Two years later, the adjustable band continues to help Jeff limit his portions. He is back down to 250 pounds and has only 10 pounds to go before reaching his final goal. “Surgery gave me a second chance,” he says. “I never looked at it as a cure-all; I see it as a tool that helps me control how much I eat.”
In addition to losing weight, Jeff’s blood pressure is normal and he can run for nearly an hour without knee pain. He also is very grateful to be back on the SWAT team.
Maintaining the momentum
Jeff likes to set the record straight with those who think surgery gives people an easy way out. “In addition to surgery, I made a commitment to a new exercise regime and healthy eating. It has become a whole new mindset and lifestyle for me.
His insurance company also recommended that Jeff see the center’s nutritionist during the six months before surgery. “She was very helpful in teaching me how to make healthier food choices,” he explains. “At my work cafeteria, I would eat lots of fried foods and huge portions. My wife also is a really good cook, and even though her meals are very healthy, I would have two or three helpings.”
Jeff is quick to recommend the professionals at Park Nicollet Bariatric Surgery Center and to credit his wife, Katie, for her tireless support. “She makes it possible for me to find time to exercise morning and night,” he adds. He also is grateful for the support from his friends at church and work.
